Context
The recent European Commission Communication COM(2011)18, highlights the relevance of school dropout in Europe, and the importance of increasing its visibility in the agenda of the community discussion, decision-making and policy-making agenda.
In Europe, in 2009 more than six million young people aged between 18 and 24 years, left school before before reaching upper secondary education, and some of them, only completed primary education. Such trend actually varies on a geographical base: in some countries the dropout rate is lower than 10%, whereas in other countries it reaches 30%.
Early school leaving increases the probability of unemployment and poverty, and it makes it more difficult to be integrated in the labour market; it is thus very important for institutions and decision makers at all levels to encourage and stress the importance of completeing a solid educational path.
The analysis of the Commission points out how early scholastic dropout is often a process, starting from the first difficulties faced in primary school. If schools, families and the resources of society are not able to support pupils in facing such failures, they can strengthen and bring to early school leaving after some years. Therefore, measures, tools and policies carried out to fight early school leaving must be sufficiently wide and comprehensive to offer a support in a prevention, intervention and in case making up phase.
Rapport project thus wishes to develop – in a completely innovative way – three training and guidance products for the strengthening of social and relational skills young people, in order to prevent early school leaving. Such resources will act on three levels:
- Prevention. Digital storytelling will be the pedagogical approach show parallel situations resulting from different educational pathways (school dropout or success)
- Intervention. Docufilm, showing people who dropped school and had a second chance to receive education and training.
- Opportunity. Documentaries about the second chances related to apprenticeship pathways. The language and communication code will be suitable to influence a target audience of young students.
RAPPORT’s methodological innovation consists in relating learning to experience, by bringing real life stories and witnesses into schools, and showing them by means of visual language (movies).

Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Crete (Greece)
Superact (UK)
Superact
Superact started life in 2006 as a Community Interest Company using the arts as a social and educational tool in communities across the UK.
As an organisation, it works in many different fields and with groups of people from a wide variety of backgrounds and abilities. Much of Superact’s work is structured to help those within the healthcare, education and criminal justice systems.
Whether it is in a hospital, a youth centre, a school, a prison or a nursing home, the aim is always to promote learning through art in a manner that is most appropriate for the specific audience and encourage those with a lack of access to art to appreciate and benefit from it in their everyday lives.
In most of the areas of Superact’s work, the arts can make a significant contribution to people’s lives: breaking down barriers, building self-esteem, promoting social inclusion and employability, and providing strong channels of expression and communication where previously they were not well established or perhaps did not exist at all.
Activities are all ‘bespoke’ in the sense that they are designed and adapted according to the particular needs of the group worked with. From educational workshop to participatory storytelling or more traditional music concert, this flexibility optimizes the relevance of the offer and is one of Superact’s key success factors in working with very different audiences and environments.
European projects are a strong point in Superact’s field of action: Superact is currently involved in a number of European multi-lateral projects, as part of a vibrant network of organisations cooperating in partnership programs, thereby contributing towards cultural diversity and opening the scope of its work to a wider, European dimension.
Financially, Superact has a ‘not for profit’ status so all monies are directed back to helping the communities it serves.
In the project, Superact will coordinate WP8 dedicated to the movies.
