Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Crete

Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education in Crete, is a large educational organization in Greece which is responsible for schools and teachers in four Prefectures, Heraklion, Rethimnon Chania and Lasithi. It is in charge of 1100 schools of both levels of education - primary and secondary, in particular 866 primary schools and 234 secondary schools (117 junior high schools, 74 high schools, 43 vocational schools). Also a number of 12445 teachers (6460 in primary education and 5985 in secondary) of all disciplines work in these schools. The total number of students in the region of Crete is 98552 (54065 in primary education and 44487 in secondary). 31 people work at the offices of Regional Directorate in addition with a big number of advisers who work at their offices. The main task of Regional Directorate is to co-ordinate, supplement, back up and implement the educational policies of the Ministry, along with supervising the implementation of various education projects, like European projects, in schools.

In accordance with Law 2986/2002, the regional decentralised services of the Ministry of Education are:

1. Regional Education Directorates headed by a Regional Education Director
2. Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education
3. The Primary and Secondary Education Offices as well as the Physical Education Offices

Each Regional Education Directorate consists of the following:

a) An Administration Department

b) A Department of Pedagogical Guidance for Primary Education and

c) A Department of Pedagogical Guidance for Secondary Education

The following services come also under the respective Directorates :

1. The Regional Further Education Centres (PEK)
2. The Centres of Differential Assessment, Diagnosis and Support of Special Education Needs (KEDDY)
3. Regional Support and Educational Planning Centres (PEKESES)
4. Environmental Education Centres (KPE)
5. Pre-Primary, Primary, Special and Secondary Education Advisors

At the headquarters of each Regional Education Directorate a Higher Regional Primary and Secondary Education Service Council operates respectively (APYSPE and APYSDE).

Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education (P6) will coordinate WP8 dedicated to the exploitation. In the project, it will participate to the realization of all WP, realizing for its own country all provided products.
